Some off the wall predictions and background history for all the teams…............ One Man Wolf Pack…Logan’s run. This team looks good. Yes they have some of the most impressive jerseys (sweaters for you older folks) in the OBBHA. They also play a great brand of OBBHA style ball hockey. They seem to come up short here and there…but they are capable of upsets. A dark horse.
Gang Green…always in the mix for the championship every session. They have been there and won it, been there and lost it (heartbreaker in OT) and missed it completely. One of the better passing teams with some snipers at the back end. Be very afraid… Thunderhawks….speed will win games and this young team has plenty of it. They can surprise any team any afternoon. They must work on team play and discipline in order to compete in the top four. Solid goaltending always keeps them in the game. Mighty Canaries…Simon/Mathieu/OBBHA have their stamp on this team and now they can play with any team on Saturday now. A tough 3 years to this point without a single victory (some gut-wrenching one goal losses and ties in there). But this team will start to win…they just need the first one! The Flying Squirrels…this team was once compared with the Mighty Canaries of old. Now they are force to behold. They run fast and have a team concept in both ends….particularly in the defensive end where most of the improvement has taken place. Watch out for those Flying animals…they could surprise everyone! Weekend Recruits…the leader of this group is their goalie T-REX. As he goes so goes the team. A group that is trying to find their game/chemistry/scoring all at once. They will compete from week to week…a lot of interesting game will be played involving this squad win or lose. Grey Zone…give this team some time to develop a strategy. They work harder than you can imagine from start to finish every game. Some veteran leadership here will help down the stretch. The OBBHA game is suited for this team so keep an eye on them! Vanier Voodoo….the defending champions! What can we say about this team. Great goaltending tandem…not many teams have two number ones! Great defensive game all round from all 4 runners on the floor at all times. Some of the most creative passing on Saturdays. They are champions until someone takes is away from them… Gang Green and Vanier Voodoo in rematch from last sessions thrilling final........ Weekend Recruits vs The Flying Squirrels....the Weekend Recruits are still working on chemistry from a fairly new line-up that has been restructured. The Flying Squirrels have developed over time into one of the stronger Saturday club with impressive team play and an emphasis on defence first. All this played true as the animals won 14-8. The rematch from last sessinos final! Vanier Voodoo won the championship in OT (see below blogs for all the details on that wild game). This time Gang Green were pumped and prepared. By early in the third period they had a 7-2 lead. They cruixed to a 7-3 win. One Man Wolf Pack vs Thunderhawks...fans were on the edge of their seats for this ride. A close well played game from start to finish. It culminated in a last minute goal from the Thunderhawks to tie this one all up at 4-4. Grey Zone vs Mighy Canaries...predictions and some hope for the Mighty Canaries getting their first ever win in the OBBHA. A tight well played first period ended with a 3-2 Grey Zone lead. In the second period the Grey boys increased it to 5-3...then the exciting third period! 5-4...6-4....6-5...6-6! With 3 minutes left the Mighty Canaries scored to make it 7-6!!!!!!!!! Then the unbelievable. 5-seconds left and Grey Zone ties it up!!!!!! Mighty Canaries still in search of that elusive first franchise win...... The Thunderhawks play best game yet in 8-2 win over the Weekend Recruits.... Vanier Voodoo 8-3 win over Mighty Canaries.....the defending champs were given a game for two periods by the ever improving Mighty Canaries, but pulled away in the third period. Gang Green 7-5 over One Man Wolf Pack.....the Pack gave it their all and were only down a goal 6-5 late in the game, but an undisciplined yellow card cost them a penalty shot goal that gave the Gang some breathing room they desperately needed. Derek Tranquilla was noted for a strong game in his first game back this session as he scored some key goals to spark a comeback after being down 2-0 early. Thunderhawks played a complete game to make this a no-doubter as they shut down the Weekend Recruits 8-3. The Flying Squirrels were....well they were flying. 8-2 over the Grey Zone who are trying to generate some chemistry into their new line-up. Place bets! Revamped teams create buzz in what looks to be pick-em session.... Gang Green needed a full out effort to defeat the Flying Squirrells who never stop running. 8-5 in a game where Terry the goalie for the Green guys was a factor. Mighty Canaries vs Thunderhawks. Oh those Mighty Canaries. Still looking for that elusive first win! They find ways to lose one-goal games but they will win soon! This time with the score tied 4-4 with just over a minute left, both teams received undisciplined yellow cards. Penalty shots for both teams....and the Thunderhawks scored on their shot while the Canaries missed. Darn!! 5-4 Thunderhawks. Two great defensive teams Vannier Voodoo vs One Man Wolf Pack. The defending champs don`t give up many goals and use creative passing to get themselves out of trouble and control the game. 5-1 in a constructive game for tlhe Voodoo who held their team awards ceremony after the game. They held their team victory party at Ralph`s Sports Bar last session....now they can go each week using the new coupons that are given out to each team every game! Grey Zone vs Weekend Recruits....two teams that have restructured their rosters. Both teams felt each other out over the course of this frist game. Some interesting chemistry on both sides. Look for both teams to do well this session! This game was back and forth all the way through. 5-4 late for the Weekend Recuits before the Grey Zone tied it up 5-5 with about 3-minutes left....which set the stage for wild fflurry of action that culminated in a goal for the Weekend Recrutis with only 4-seconds left for the 6-5 win. Game On! The Opening Day for the Winter Session is Saturday, January 14th... Final game for Fall Saturday league are Sunday, December 18th from 6-9pm..... Semi-final action was great today! One Man Wolf Pack dropped a game by last week to the Weekend Recruits, but this time they turned the tables as they doubled up the Recruits 6-3. The Recruits were unlucky in this one as they almost hit double digits in goal-posts! Awwwww! The Mighy Canaries are so close to their first victory every week now! This time a late goal once again was the difference in a 9-8 loss. They had a short bench as many of their new bodies were at Xmas parties...but things bode well for the Winter Session for this team. Look for them to win their share of games with a vastly improving line-up. Note that The Bigs are being rebuilt as well and will be returning with a new name and new line-up.... Bar Down Bandits vs Gang Green....winner goes to the finals. Some thought Gang Green would walk away with this one. But the Bandits never give up remember! After two periods it was 4-1 Gang Green in a match that was between Green passing and Bandits speed. Very well played! 7-1 Gang Green. Vanier Voodoo vs The Flying Squirrles. Billed as the game of the day before it even started. Scoreless after one period was no surprise as both teams always receive solid goaltending and play both ends of the floor very well with an accent of the defensive part of the game. True to form it was 1-1 after two periods of play. With a shoot-out looming with less than 5-minutes to play...Vanier Voodoo star Dave McClosky scored a pair within 30 seconds of each other to give them a 3-1 lead. The Squirrels scored one with 20-seconds left and had a chance to tie it up in the final seconds. Awesome game! 3-2 Vanier Voodoo who go on to meet Gang Green in the final. Mighty Canaries so close to getting a tie in an end to end full-out running game.... Weekend Recruits stunned the One Man Wolf Pack with an outburst of 10 goals. The Recruits were backstopped by some solid netminding and a mind for defence! Mighty Canaries are rebuilding and the core took The Bigs into the final minute of play tied 5-5. A horendous giveaway by the D cost them "'the big" goal that made the final 6-5 for The Bigs. A shorter bench hurt the mighty game Canaries. The Flying Squirrels are for real. It has been quite impressive to see this team transform over time. From where they came it is clear this team has developed chemistry while learing ball control and creative play-making. The OBBHA game was made for them it appears as they dominated a team that has been improving lately by leaps and bounds as well. A bit if shocker at 7-3 for the Squirrels.....but this game was much closer that the score suggests. Gang Green 9-4 over Bar Down Bandits....the story of this game was the entertaining acrobatic style of Sam in the net for the Bandits while team captain and goalie Terry gave it a go as a runner. Both survived the eperience. Flying Squirrels continue to impress with their full court press style strategy........ The Squirrels defeated the Bar Down Bandits 10-3 utilizing their new found game confidence. They look good and make some fun plays. The Bandits were a little short on the bench which hurt them in in long run against a full slate of runners. Weekend Recruits outscored the Mighty Canaries 14-8 in a fun run. Some new players on the Canaries are commenting on the exercise value of the OBBHA (no kidding) and say they will get better as they get in shape!.The Recuits are sweating it out with some energy for the full hour....and they sure were glad to have Mike back in the net after his sunny break down South. They could have used those 14 goals last week! The Bigs vs One Man Wolf Pack... lower scoring game that was hard to figure out. 7-4 for The Bigs in a game where you were just waiting for the Pack to start scoring more....but they just are not getting any bounces thats for sure. Vanier Voodoo vs Gang Green....the most anticipated match of the day at the end of the day! One fo the two Voodoo goalies and team captain Mike Pelletier got the start and carried his shut-out streak into the second period after his boys took a 1-0 lead scoring in the final minute of the first period. Gang Green were down 2-0 and seeds of doubt were creeping into their full bench. Finally they got rolling and took a 3-2 lead only to have Vanier Voodoo tie it up in the final minute of the second period. This fantastic game was tied 4-4 going into the final two minutes when Gang Green potted the winner for the 5-4 victory. Too bad there had to be a winner in a very well played match. Defensive system were strong and quality scoring chances were hard to come by until the wild end to end third period. The fans loved this one as they were still talking about the game long afterwards in the halls of the French Palace. Mighty Canaries play their best game in franchise history with a new look line-up The Flying Squirrels are not just happy to be in the top four, they are playing like they belong in the top four. Top team and the favourtes are Gang Green and they had their hands full with Squirrels. 6-6 deep into the third period before two late goals put it away for Gang Green 8-6. The Bigs had a short bench but used all their energy well in 13-8 win over the Weekend Recruits. Mighty Canaries played a whale of a game against a very solid opponent in One Man Wolf Pack. It seemed the game was tied 2-2 forever in a goaltenders battle. Finally the Pack prevailed 4-3....but the good news for the league is that the Mighty Canaries appear to be a much stronger team now with some key pick-ups. Vanier Voodoo vs Bar Down Bandits.....two very evenly matched teams. Both work hard and at times can be very creative with passing plays. On this night Vanier Voodoo would play one their most complete games ever in a 7-0 win. A second shut-out for the team this fall session and with different goalies! This time Mike Pelletier makes OBBHA history with the first ever OBBHA play-off shut-out....congratulations to Mike and the team. One-Game Play-off matches decide the 2 groups of 4 for the next play-off phase Weekend Recruits (seed 5) vs Flying Squirrels (seeed 4)....what a game! 2-2 after one period. 4-4 after two periods. Then with less than minute left the Weekend Recruits looked to worked hard enough to earn the right to move up to the top four play-off group for the remainder of the session. But their 6-5 lead disappeared in a wild turn of events. The Flying Squirrels never quit and tied it up 6-6 with 35-seconds left in the game...the ball rolled slowly into the net past several bodies in a wild scramble in front of the Weekend Recruits net. Then an undisciplined comment to the Game Manager cost the Recruits dearly as a yellow card was issued with the accompanied penalty shot. The Flying Squirrels capitalized on the penalty shot and held off the Recruits in the final 35 seconds for the 7-6 win. Bar Down Bandits placed second and easily handled The Bigs 9-3. The difference was the size of the benches. The larger bench beat the under-manned Bigs bench. Top team Gang Green vs bottom Mighty Canaries....but this one was tied 2-2 after two periods. Great Canary goaltending and some "super-subs" were a factor for the Canaries. But the Gang Green is a top club an proved it the third by never giving in to any seeds of doubt for a 6-3 win. 6 seed Vanier Voodoo vs 3rd seed One Man Wolf Pack....the Pack held a 5-4 lead with less than 2-minutes left. Then the upset of the day took place in those two minutes. Voodoo put on a big push to score 3 goals to win 7-5 and move up into the top four play-off group. Final regular season games realign the standings for play-off games to come... 2011 Play-offs work this way: After each team plays one another (7-game regular season) everyone is ranked 1 through 8. Then there is a one game play-off to determine two groups of 4 (1vs8, 2vs7, 3vs6, 4vs5). The winners and losers of these games are divided into the top 4 (winners of sudden death game) and bottom 4 (losers). The two groups play within their own divisions the rest of the way.....first a round robin of three games. Then a semi-final (1vs4, 2vs3) followed by a final seeding game for the final game. This keeps the similiar skilled teams playing one another, while still giving a lower seed a chance at the top four with that sudden death game right after the regular season. In total there are 5 play-off games that everyone plays! Remember no games on November 5th and the play-offs start November 12th. See schedule for play-off game time schedule.... 8vs1 (Mighty Canaries vs Gang Green) 7vs2 (Bigs vs Bar Down Bandits) 6vs3 (Vanier Voodoo vs One Man Wolf Pack 5vs4 (Weekend Recruits vs The Flying Squirrels) Scroll down to beginning of session for play-off format explanation One Man Wolf Pack vs The Flying Squirrels...2-top four seeded teams playing some quick tempo ball hockey to start the day off. Squirrels have really improved their defensive system and show flashes of speed and creativity up front. The One Man Wolf Pack have been playing well all session so far and use all 4 players smartly on the offence while keeping teams to the outside on the D-side of the equation. This game was wild! A close game came down to this....6-4 with less than 2-minutes left for the One Man Wolf Pack. Then the Flying Squirrels scored with 1:45 left before coming up with the tie in dramatic fashion with only 2-seconds left on the clock! 6-6 final. Mighty Canaries vs Weekend Recruits....the Canaries have steadily shown improvement this fall session and an attitude adjustment clearly needed, is beginning to keep them in games. The Weekend Recruits are trying to find some offence in their game...there goaltending and team D is pretty darn good though. 12-4 Weekend Recruits found the scoring touch in an evenly played match though. Gang Green vs The Bigs...the Gang is not always there, but they are finding ways to play a structured game that keeps them ahead in most games. The Bigs are playing hard but not scoring like they once did. Gang Green out-passed The Bigs for a 13-2 win. Vanier Voodoo vs Bar Down Bandits...both teams have been playing some fine ball hockey so far. Voodoo displays some of the finest passing the Saturday league has ever seen. The Bandits are playing well in all facets of the game and this has put them solidly in the top four going into the play-offs. The Bandits looked pretty impressive in todays game for a 12-6 win. A great day of close games equals some Fun, Fitness, Friendship and Fairplay One Man Wolf Pack can shut teams down. They did just that today with a 3-1 defensive gem over the Weekend Recruits. They held 1-0 and 3-1 period leads followed by a scoreless third. Unreal how they can do this for the full hour. The Weekend Recuits played a strong game and just could not bulge the twine. Fun game. The Flying Squirrels are surprsing everyone and maybe even themselves with sold defensive play that has moved them up in the standings like never before. This time they decided to do the comeback thing. The Kardiac Kids were down 4-1 to The Bigs and it looked like the Bigs would use their offence to put this one away. But the Squirrels came back to tie it up at 5-5 before a late goal with less than two-minutes left followed by another gave them a 7-5 win. The Mighty Canaries are getting better and better each week! This time the Bar Down Bandits saw this first hand as they had all they could handle in a 5-3 lead. The Canaries almost have their discipline problems under wraps and are really working on the structure of their 4 on 4 play. Their goaltender keeps them in the game and they are getting more and more offensive chances as they think defence first before moving the ball out. The Bandits were fortunate for a 5-3 win. Gang Green vs Vanier Voodoo....Gang Green were on the top of their game in all areas of the game. Vanier Voodoo played well and were impressed with the strong play from the `Safety Green`coloured boys. Well played positionally with some creative stuff to have fun with. 8-2 final Gang Green. The Flying Squirrels show they can play defence too in 4-1 shut the door win... Bar Down Bandits played a consistent game to take a 9-5 lead with four minutes to go in the game. Then the Weekend Recruits mounted a comeback that came up one goal short...but they did hit a post and an empty net. 9-8 final. They Flying Squirrels and Vanier Voodoo played one of those rare low scoring games in the OBBHA. It was 1-0 after two periods for the little rascals. Then they put the Flying back in their name to take a 4-0 lead. The only question was the shut-out. Dave McLosky (spell check here) broke the shut-out with just one minute left in the game. 4-1 final. The Bigs vs One Man Wolf Pack....the Pack uneveiled their 3rd jersey Ducks shirts to tremendously strong reviews from the French Palace faithful. The impressive look carried into their play as well as they doubled The Bigs 6-3. Special mention to the strong play from The Bigs goaltender! Mighty Canaries vs Gang Green... The Canaries played a very strong opening period and showed some structure to their game. Well done! However, a toe injury depleted the bench strength and Gang Green used the extra man on the bench to full advantage to pull away for the win. 12-2 final Vanier uses Voodoo to score two goals in final minute take down The Bigs 7-6 Gang Green had to dig down deep for an 8-4 win over the stubborn Weekend Recuits. A close game until late as a high tempo game was a pleasure to play in and watch from the stands. Mighty Canaries were in this one at 4-4 late in the second and only down 5-4 after two periods to the Flying Squirrels. Then the age old problem of focussing of the calls from the Game Manager came back to haunt the Canaries. They forgot to concentrate on passing the ball on possession changes as they instead focussed on previous calls. Sigh. The Squirrels disregarded all this and scored 7 goals in a row in the 3rd period for a 12-4 win. Double Sigh. Game of the Day! The headliner said it all....but the Vanier Voodoo and The Bigs played an awesome game that was very exciting and well played. Voodoo passing was impressive and The Bigs tried to set-up the big shots from the point. Great match boys! One Man Wolf Pack vs Bar Down Bandits...kudos to the Bar Down Bandits fans! They implored their boys to `stop fighting amongst themselves and get along``....gotta love that! The boys settled down and began to enjoy each others company and the game after that strong advice from someone so nice. A great game was going on otherwise. The Pack took a 5-3 lead into the third period. The Bandits worked hard and were rewarded to make it 5-4. This score held up deep into the 3rd period....with one minute and thirty seconds left the Bandits tied it up 5-5! A flurry of action ensued with 52-seconds left the comeback was complete a la Tampa Bay Rays....6-5 for the Bar Down Bandits in a barn burner!!! Two goaltenders named Terry show off their impressive skills in game of day.... Let's start off with the last game of the day, which ended up being the "Game of the Day". Bar Down Bandits vs Gang Green. Two goaltenders named Terry. Two evenly matched team. An even more evenly played game. 4-4 after two periods. Only one goal scored in the third period. One Man Wolf Pack 9-4 over the Vanier Voodoo.....what is up with the Pack!? Are they from Green Bay? They look impressive and played through a very even game with the Vanier Voodoo before pulling away gradually for the win. The Voodoo goalie had his shut-out string snapped 7-minutes into the game after staging the big 0 last week. Flying Squirrels and Bar Down Bandits stage wild 11-11 tie to delight of the fans... It was a classic offence vs offence game. The Flying Squirrels were down 10-8 and came back to take an 11-10 lead only to have the Bar Down Bandits tie it up with 10 seconds left. The Bigs used their speed and some seriously steady goaltending to take a 9-1 win over the Weekend Recruits who just could not penetrate for any sustained pressure. Shut-Out! A rare OBBHA shut-out for the Vanier Voodoo 7-0 over the Mighty Canaries. The Voodoo employed some very impressive team play as the passes were crisp and team defence became the theme as the clock wore down. The Canaries after a slow start (5-0 after one period) started to play a good game themselves as they only gave up two in the second period and none in the third. The media scrummed the Voodoo goalie after the game for comments on the previously mentioned very rare OBBHA shut-out....he gave a top-rated interview! One Man Wolf Pack vs Gang Green....everyone was looking forward to this match. Some were calling for an upset by the Pack. The Pack showed up with a shorter bench than usual and they did not get off to a quick start as they were down 3-0 early in the second period. They came to life to tie it 3-3 mid-way through the second period as the Gang Green had another let down after taking a lead. By the end of the second to was 5-3 for the Pack...and Terry in the nets for Gang Green was keeping them in the game! An undisciplined player from the Pack took a Yellow for unsportsmanlike behaviour of all things....and the resulting penalty shot made it 5-4. The pack held on for the 5-4 ``upset`win....so much for those Gang Green predictions of running the table!!! Bar Down Bandits provide the first upset of the session with 6-4 win over Bigs Gang Green (formerly the Wildcards) have teamed up with Stingers to produce the first real "favourite" to win the Saturday league. They have the wildest coloured OBBHA T-shirts to boot! Everyone was trying to find the proper name for the colour....."safety green" was one....but Gang Green is appropriate enough. The two groups play within their own divisions the rest of the way.....first a round robin of three games. Then a semi-final (1vs4, 2vs3) followed by a final seeding game for the final game. Back and forth it went until at 7-7 The Bigs scored late to win 8-7. Very entertaining to watch this well played game! The Battle of the ``Onliners`` with the Weekend Recruits and Top Shelf Terror... The Flying Squirrels vs Mighty Canaries...its always exciting when these two teams meet. Optimistic feelings flow from both teams as victory is envisioned. The Flying Squirrels have really improved their game of late, so the Canaries knew they had to up their own game a level. And the Canaries continued to add to their roster a couple of skilled players. This made for a well played high scoring game. 12-6 for the scurry over the flyer. Top Shelf Terror vs Weekend Recruits...two ``OBBHA`` built teams from online registrations. Top Shelf Terror is a little longer in the tooth while the Weekend Recruits are the expansion franchise with all momentum after opening the Spring session with a pair of impressive running wins. So all the Onliners were ready for this one. First star of the game was Top Shelf`s Terry in the net, He held off a furious attack from the Weekend Recruits for as long as he could. 0-0 after one and 3-1 after two periods....finally in the 3rd the Weekend boys put it away for a convincing 7-1 win. One Man Wolf Pack vs The Bigs...Defence vs Offence. The French Palace crowd was pumped for this one. And the game did not disappoint. Nice passing and some speed were featured in a long hard match. The Bigs continue to surprise everyone as they keep scoring in bunches to continually reach double digits every game and are playing some sound defence too! Until the last 5-minutes of the game when they gave up 6-goals. 10-6 final. Squirrels were Flying on a beautiful day of ball hockey at the French Palace... Flying Squirrels found their offence over Top Shelf Terror.....10-3 in a game that the Squirrels will want to bottle and open up later in the session. Their signature defensive game turned offence as they gained some confidence moving the ball around in a skilled manner. Some fine saves at either end had the crowd applauding the goalies through-out the match. Weekend Recruits vs One Man Wolf Pack.....Game of the Day! Weekend Recruits show that last weeks strong game was no fluke! This was a fast-paced well played game. One Man Wolf Pack held a 6-3 lead after 2-periods and seemed destined to keep that lead for a win. However the Weekend Recruits found that all important third period gear to outscore the Wolf Pack 5-1 to sneak out an 8-7 win. The last few minutes featured a furious attack from the Pack...but Michael in the net stood firm with help from a huge shot block from a D-man in the slot with 3-seconds left! Fun! Mighty Canaries vs The Bigs...The Canaries weclomed a couple of new players into the nest..Joey and Steve. They helped with some solid running, but The Bigs put together a solid team game for another huge scoring spree. The Bigs are the big guns of the league at this point. They scored into double digits once again for a 12-5 win. The Weekend Recruits showcase some flashy chemistry as an expansion club... Election fever? No way! Spring ball hockey is what is coarsing through everyone`s veins as the sun starts to feel warmer in our region. The new team on the block is the Weekend Recruits. Made up from individual online registrations nobody knew what to expect from this group. How about an impressive forecheck and backcheck, heads up passing and just plain old chemistry. 7-2 over the always hard running Flying Squirrels was the final. Let`s not call this an upset....just a pleasent surprise! One Man Wolf Pack came out as a pack and packed in the goals for a 10-4 win over the Mighty Canaries. Canaries had a shorter bench but had some skill on it, so the Wolf Pack had to earn the win. Great pace for the first game back after a couple of weeks off. Top Shelf Terror...love that name. Formerly the Onliners, this team is a little longer in the tooth comprared with the Weekend Recruits. A few seasons ago this team was put together from online sign-ups...hence the team name Onliners. Now they have their own identity in name and their signature exuberant work ethic. The Bigs matched the effort in an entertaining game. They held a 5-goal lead early only to have Top Shelf Terror breathe a litte terror into them....they closed it to within one goal late in the game until finally The Bigs scored an insurance marker to make it 11-9.
The Saturday Spring Session schedule is posted. Click the Schedules link for it. The Professional Slackers are champs with 7-6 OT win over the Blades of Steel First ever OT game in OBBHA history......... The Saturday Winter League final ranks right up there with the top OBBHA finals ever! The iron clad defensive system of the Blade of Steel (with goaltending to back it up) is very similar to that of the Montreal Canadiens. The Professional Slackers are the gritty side of any hockey club anywhere....they have played in the OBBHA for quite a few sessons now and in this Winter session they played in two! The Saturday league and the Sunday league, The Slackers were a tired group from all this hockey and their perfect regular season in the Sunday night league turned into a winless play-offs as they dropped four straight. Buth they gutted out some key wins in the Saturday league to make an appearance in the finals. Things looked bleak as the Blades of Steel capitalized on some early miscues for a 3-1 lead and kept that lead after one peroid. The second period ended 3-2 as the game became very well defended at both ends. Then it became good old fashioned OBBHA game! Early in the third the Professional Slackers broke out into a 5-3 lead only to have the Blades of Steel score on a couple of goal mouth scrambles to tie it at 5-5. A goal with about 3 minutes left gave the Slackers a 6-5 lead. The Blades of Steel did not pull their goalie but tied it up with 20 seconds left and it ended 6-6 after regualation. OBBHA rules stipulate that their would be a 5 man shoot-out for each team....but because this was the last the game of the night and no games to follow and the kindness of school custodians on staff....the teams voted for a 5-minute sudden death OT before a possible shoot-out. Well the pace was frantic and fun! Finally with just over one-minute left in OT the Professional Slackers scored on a deflection to take the Championship 7-6. Fabulous match for a final!!! The Flying Squirrels were just flying in a 12-1 clipping of the Mighty Canaries The Bigs were scored on big time in 11-5 loss to the howling One Man Wolf Pack. Stingers sting Wildcards 9-5. Vanier Voodoo did some Online doll pin simulations to turn tables on Onliners 8-7. Classic close games finalize the final seeding games to be played next Saturday Some wild games and wild outcomes in the standings for the final seeding games next week.... In the finals next week will be the Professional Slackers vs Blades of Steel -the two teams met today with Blades of Steel riding hot goaltending and great team defence for a 5-2 win. A well played match that has everyone drooling for the rematch. -the Stingers did their part to try and reach finals winning their game 8-6 over the defending champions the Wildcards. Alas, they miss out because of the GF-GA tie-breaker vs the Professional Slackers (they tied their round-robin head to head play-off game earlier 3-3). It was close as the Slackers were only better by 2-goals. This particular game was one in which the Wildcards held healthy first period lead, but the Stingers staged an impressive third period comeback and empty netter for the win. The "Green Monster" in the net straight from the Hartford Whalers was impressive in his debut...however he was a little lucky as the Wildcards hit the cross-bar with 7-seconds left with the score 7-6! This will be a great rematch for the 3rd seed game! 4-teams tied for 5th place through 8th place. GF-GA is the tie-breaker used when 3 or more teams are tied and did not all meet in head to head games. -so the 5th seed will be played between The Bigs/One Man Wolf Pack....Pack snuck out a 6-5 win over a stubborn Flying Squirrels team and The Bigs used a 15-7 over the Canaries to vault into the top spot of the bottom group of 6. -the 7th seed game pits the Vanier Voodoo vs Onliners....a rematch of today's fun 7-6 win for the Onliners over the Voodoo. -the 9th seed is "family affair" as the friends from The Flying Squirrels and Mighty Canaries play in the dream match-up.
One Man Wolf Pack unleash the pack for a 12-goal outburst over the Canaries... The Flying Squirrels upset the favoured Onliners 5-4 in a very exciting game. The Squirrels showcased some speed and some excellent passing to the surprise of the fans! One Man Wolf Pack make the headlines with a 12-goal outburst over the Mighty Canaries. Some nice in close tips for pretty goals. Vanier Voodoo take out The Bigs 9-4.....Voodoo looked very sharp from start to finish. Sharp shooters found the range for a comfortable win. Blades of Steel brought some emotion to the game that actually brought the game to a halt a couple of times....controlled emotion mixed with fun is the OBBHA motto. To their credit they settled into this theme and used their speed to cruize to a surprisingly easy 8-3 win over the Stingers. Goaltending was a factor for the Blades of Steel as their man was rock solid. Professional Slackers finally got the Wildcard to take the trick in a 5-3 win. A very well played and fun game! This game was the highlight of the afternoon. Some great saves and great goals with no cars to delay the game.....great time everyone! And the Slackers beat the Wildcards for the very first time after some heart-breaking losses to them over the last couple of seasons. Stingers and Professional Slackers fit to be tied as Stingers rally late for 3-3 final The Mighty Canaries were very short benched and played an amazing first period. But then the gas ran out of the tank as the Onliners used their bench strength to download the birds for a 10-4 save. Vanier Voodoo and One Man Wolf Pack staged a classic defensive game that was very exciting. Voodoo prevailed 5-3 in a very evenly played game. The Bigs have some big offence, everyone knows that. But defence and goaltending? Well they put it all together for a 12-2 over The Flying Squirrels who were scurrying around trying to find some offence of their own. Wildcards jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and then settled into a titanic defensive game vs the very stingy Blades of Steel. The Blades of Steel have not beaten a top four team, while beating all of the bottom six. In this one they kept to their system and crept back to make it 3-2. Then their goalie took an undisciplined yellow card...he stopped the penalty shot, but he put his team in a tight situation. One more yellow for him and then they play without the goalie...including the penalty shot. He did not take another yellow and his team had a chance to rally in the last minute....but the WIldcards win yet another close game 3-2. The headliner was another monster defensive geme. A 3-3 tie between the Stingers and the Professional Slackers. The Slackers held a 3-1 late in the game. The Stingers scored a couple of well screened shots from the point to tie it up. The teams traded glorious chances right to the final moments of this exciting match. Goalies shared the First Star of the game for sure! Play-off match-ups set after exhilerating games in final regular season games... Stingers 9-4 win over Vanier Voodoo as goalending was the difference in what was otherwise a fairly evenly played game. One Man Wolf Pack 6-2 over The Flying Squirrels....the Squirrels were looking for their 3rd straight win, but could not find the offence in a very defensively minded game. Blades of Steel have kept the opposition limited to one goal several times, missing the very rare and difficult to acheive in the OBBHA shut-out. This time they threw the blanket over the Mighty Canaries for a 7-0 whitewash. Wildcards played all the trumpcards to get ready for the play-off run for a 16-3 pasting of The Bigs. Professonal Slackers and Onliners played the entertaining match of the day. 9-9 tie they saw many lead changes. Chris Rutt came out of the net to play out and pocketed two goals. At the end of the game for fun a shoot-out took place. Slackers back-up goalie Matt Gibson was solid in this skills competition stopping all the shots for the victory. Oh and the winner in the shoot-out goes to none other than Chris Rutt....and the fans loved it! Street Hockey wins important court ruling for us in Dollard-Des-Ormeaux, Que... A municipal court judge ruled that a father who was ticketed for playing hockey in the street with his son does not have to pay the $75 fine. The judge ruled in his favour because the bylaws had been adopted for safety reasons and in this case -plying street hockey on a quiet suburban street- there were no such issues. When the case first went to court last October, the father told the court that even though no one is allowed to play in the streets of Canada according to bylaws across ``hockey-land``, there would not be enough officers to enforce that rule. Kids continue to play street hockey on every street in every city. The father will be celebrating the court win with a game of street hockey with neighbours in their Montreal Island community. Woo! Hoo! The Flying Squirrels looked to start a 2-game winning streak while the Onliners, missing their fearless leader yet again, needed the 2-points to stay in contention for the top four play-off grouping. And the upset took place as the Flying Squirrels win 7-5 in a fast paced game. Sleep well boys! One Man Wolf Pack were looking to derail the Blades of Steel chances for the top four play-off group. But they had to get past the stingy defence and solid Blades goaltending. Ho-Hum just another one goal against for the Blades of Steel in a 4-1 win. Great goaltending from both sides in this one. The Mighty Canaries expected to get stung by the Stingers....They were in the game at the mid-way point only down 5-3. But the Stingers stayed the course for an 11-4 win. The Bigs vs Vanier Voodoo....The Bigs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Then the Voodoo crew came back to take a 5-3 lead, Then....well lead changed hands a few times until it was 9-9 with 5 minutes left in the game. Finally Bigs team captain Ronnie stopped taking illegal slap shots (shoulder on the wind up and shoulder on the follow-through is the rule) and his legal shots started to find the mark in a 12-9 win for his boys. The fans filed in early to fill up the French Palace to capacity. The buzz in the air was infectious as hearts were racing and the predictions were flying. Two undefeated teams setting the tone for the round robin play-offs. Lot`s of fun to had for this one! Game On! Goaltending on both sides was strong as per usual. The NHL should bottle this game and promote it....clean game played with respect for each other. 1-0 after on for the WIldcards and 2-1 after two periods. Wildcards seem to have the Slackers number as they were impressive in playing Montreal Canadiens style defence for a 4-1 win. The Flying Squirrels clip Mighty Canaries wings 7-5 in much anticipated match Vanier Voodoo played with tons of confidence in front of their goalie Michael Pelletier in 10-2 romp over One Man Wolf Pack. This game was circled on the calendar for weeks in advance. The Flying Squirrels and their friends on the Mighty Canaries traded leads until third period. With the Canaries up 4-3 and captain Simon Larente getting chance after chance.....the Squirrles then surged for 4 goals to take a 7-4 advantage. The Canaries would not land without a a late flurry. They closed it to 7-5 and hit a cross-bar before the final whistle. Blades of Steel beat The Bigs 8-2, but The Bigs gave them a full run for the full hour. Good clean intensity. Wildcards won a testy match 14-3 over the Onliners who were missing their team captain Tim McLeod and his leadership. Professional Slackers vs Stingers..... another much anticipated game. The Slackers found themselves down 3-0 yet again early in a game! The Stingers are a mature and hard working team. The Professional Slackers had to gve it their all to make the comeback and win 11-5. The Slackers' fans were breathless after this very well played match. Dan Deacon leads the Onliners back into the top four group with two key goals Dan Deacon scored his teams first two goals in a key 6-2 win for his Onliners over the One Man Wolf Pack. Dan almost had the hat-trick several times as the fans were on the edge of their seats ready to throw their caps onto the floor if he did! Other than Dan's heroics.....the Pack recieved several amazing glove saves from their goalie that had the fans roaring their approval. Stingers vs Blades of Steel....the Blades of Steel seem to always be in very tight exciting games. This one was tied 3-3 after two periods. They were unlucky to lose 6-4, but the Stingers played a creattive game and recieved stellar goaltending, Entertaining game! The Bigs got their first win of the session with a 12-2 win over the Mighty Canaries. Lot's of fun and a good sweat for everyone. Vanier Voodoo tried to upset the Professional Slackers with a defence first game. They almost pulled it off wih Michael Pelletier playing well in the nets. But the Slackers played with poise and confidence in front of a standing room only crowd that applauded them throughout a solid 5-2 performance. The crowd thinned considerably for the nightcap....an 8-1 win for the Wildcards over The Flying Squirrels. When will that small bench come out to haunt the defending champs??? Watch out, the top six teams can beat each other on any given Saturday.... The Flying Squirrels score with one minute left in game to edge The Bigs 10-9 Onliners 8-1 win over Mighty Canaries who won`t be tweeting about this game. But the birds deserve recognition for a good outing. Strong goaltending from the Onliners enabled them to cruise to the easy victory. Stingers 13-3 over the One Man Wolf pack....some very fine creative play from the Stingers. The old guys can play. And their goalie Rob gutted out the full 60 minutes with a nasty pulled hamstring. Good defence helped him out late in the game. The Bigs and The Flying Squirrels had heads and and the score card turning....10-9 for the litte critters on a big goal with one minute left in the game. Wild action right to the final seconds. Vanier Voodoo vs Wildcards.....Defence! Defence! And goaltending! 5-2 for the Wildcards in a very well played match. Nice ball movement which made for a free flowing game that was fun to watch. Ratings were high for viewership as the fans stayed riveted to their seats for this one. Blades of Steel vs Professional Slackers....the Slackers were looking professional with the 0 in the loss column in the Saturday and Sunday OBBHA leagues. After the first period the Blades of Steel held a 3-0 lead. Early in the second the Slackers broke the ice to make it 3-1 then 3-2 before letting down for a few minutes to find themselves down 5-2! A late surge brought the game to 5-4 at the end of the second. The third period was intense and fun to play. The Slackers scored three to take a 7-5 lead....and held on for a 7-6 win. The Blades of Steel continue to impress with their great defence and goaltending Stingers came out strong and played a complete game in both ends of the gym for 9-4 win over the Onliners. The Stingers looked fit and kept up a fast pace that had the Onliners scrambling around at times. Blades of Stteel were at it again....with great defence in another one goal against game. That`s 3 of 4 games they achieved this result. 6-1 over the Vanier Voodoo. Suddenly the previously high scoring Voodoo are scoring like the Sens, which is not much. Need to put some voodoo on those sticks! Scoring! One Man Wolf Pack bulged the twine 14 times. The BIgs made the mistake of trying to play a shoot shoot game and that did not work in a 14-7 loss. Defence is the theme on Saturday for success it seems. Professional Slackers vs. The Flying Squirrels....The furry creatures find out that you just can't compete in an OBBHA game with a short bench. The full benched Professional Slackes made them pay 14-1. Chris Rutt....what happened on the one goal? High stick?? Or distracted yet again by John?? Wildcards vs Mighty Canaries...can a 14-0 game for the Wildcards be a game that was very well played and even a closely played game? Yes to this as the Mighty Canaries ran hard all game and had fun! But the big news is all about Lindsay Andrusek....she of the original goalie for the WIldcards, now a solid two-way player on the "winningest team". She potted first career goal in the OBBHA and was presented with the souvenir. She then proceeds to get a second goal with little fanfare, and on her chance for the hatrick she missed an open net! Congratulations Lindsay!! Defence is the telling theme for success in the tight Saturday Afternoon League.. Onliners 4-2 over Vanier Voodoo.....Onliners jammed up the middle of the playing surface and made the safe outlet pass up the boards, Add in the fact that Terry was terrific between the pipes and there was no chance any evil spirit or any kind of Voodoo was going to find the net very often against the Onliners. Stingers 6-3 over The Flying Squirrels....the furry creatures had a 2-0 lead early and held on to it for a long time. The game was tied 2-2 entering the third period. The Stingers slowly pulled away but needed some key saves from their own goalie in order to mount the comeback. Brandon Kennedy was the first star in the nets for The Flying Squirrels. One Man Wolf Pack played a great game from start to finish over the Mighty Canaries who may have focussed on the wrong areas of the game in order to enjoy the game more. 11-3 for the animals. Professional Slacekers jumped out to a big lead over The Bigs and cruised to an 8-3 win. Game of the Night!. 5-4 Wildcards edge Blades of Steel....two teams that play excellent defence and rely on great goaltending. A very high octane OBBHA game to end the day. Hot action on a cold day. WIldcards score with 1:11 left in the game to win yet another close game. The Blades of Steel had only given up one goal per game coming into this one. They were missing a couple of stalward defence for this game...but their replacements played awesome! Wonderful game as everyone had a role to play and lots of fun to be had! Some good old fashioned stick voodoo and big time goaltending beats the snow For the second straight Saturday the snowman visits game day. No matter the French Palace provided some respite from old man winter..... -Blades of Steel goaltending and team defence are making the headlines very early in the session. Another one goal against game in a 5-1 win over the Onliners. This one was scoreless after one and 3-1 after two. A couple of late goals put this one away as the Onliners could not penetrate the prevent defence and solid netminding the Blades of Steel threw at them. Vanier Voodoo captain Michael Pelletier has had the voodoo stick working very early in both games so far this winter....too hot to touch said the Game Manager at one point! This game versus the Flying Squirrels was a wild one. Check this out....5-2 early in second for Vanier....then 5 straight as squirrels were flying through the Palace for 7-5 little critter lead....then 5 in a row from the voodoo dolls to make it 10-7 at the end of the second period. The Flying Squirrels cut it to 10-9 before succumbing 11-9. Stingers had it all going their way in a 16-5 win over the unlucky "The Bigs" squad, Some nice goaltending for the Stingers added to lopsided score. The defending champion Wildcards were once again in a tight game....this time vs One Man Wolf Pack. Scoreless after one period. 1-1 after two frames. Down 2-1 only to come back and win 5-3. Great goaltending at both ends for this evenly played match. Professional Slackers had it all their way for a 15-1 win over the Mighty Canaries. Shut-out was lost in final minutes as some good natured ribbing was going on....lots of laughs despite the score. And then off into the snow.......
The First Games of the Winter Session feature some exciting and close games! Three new teams were in action for the first time in the OBBHA...here are the highlights of the games on opening day. Blades of Steel win their first OBBHA game in their first attempt. 7-1 over the "new" Flying Squirrels. A closer game than the score would indicate. Vanier Voodoo found the scoring touch! 13 times! 13-6 over the always game Mighty Canaries. Some Voodoo on some of the goals. The captains were hot in this one as they bagged a few goals each in this one. The Onliners continue to be the surprise of the league. A team put together by the league from individual registrations found some chemistry last session to crack the top four play-off round. This time they had a 5-4 lead until the "The Bigs" tied it up with 50-seconds left. Very fun game! The defending champs had their hands full with another new team.....the Stingers. The WIldcards came in fresh from champagne showers over Xmas and New Years to find themselves trailing at several moments of this fine game. Finally they scored some timely goals to eke out a 10-8 win. Stingers will do well for sure as they play a high tempo and disciplined game. Game of the day! Professional Slackers 4-2 over One Man Wolf Pack. These teams always play the most exciting games. The fans were on the edge of their seats once again as this one was tied 2-2 after 2-periods of play. Once again the Slackers broke away from the Pack with 2 late goals. The One Man Wolf Pack hit some iron a few times in the last frame, so this game could have gone the other way! Xmas Classic tournament recap! 24 teams tested their skills and endurance in one of Ottawa's most demanding tournaments. Non-stop play and tons of games for every team had everyone going home happy for a Xmas time rest before Santa becomes the focus! The tournament format ensured 4 champions and lots of close games due to similar skilled teams being pitted against one anohter for the play-off rounds. There were too many games of the 56 games played to list and tell their stories properly. Rest assured there were many last second goals and near misses to have everyone excited and laughing. One game from them all has to be mentioned though.....the Bronze Championship Game between Team Ricky Martin vs Multiple Scorgams was tied 3-3 after regulation and after the obligatory 5 shooters each. Get this! It went 19-rounds until finally the Multiple goals provided one last Scorgasm for the Bronze game. Their picture and those of the other champions will be posted soon. Everyone was a champion on this day as this game of attrition tested everyone's heart and muscles. The endurance even was too much for one team as they had to bow out due to aching bodies even though they had qualified for the Rust Champions semi-final match! And how about the Gold Champion Ottawa 69's using 4 different players in the nets throughout the day. Who gets top goalie mention there? And the nicest guys in the French Palace on this day? Has to be the boys from out East as the Bulldogs win the Rust Championship. Silver winners you ask? Road Warriors, who got better as the day went on. Thanks to everyone who came out to enjoy a day full of Fun, Fitness, Friendship and Fair-play! The OBBHA 4-F motto!! Select transcripts from Phantom Interview with all three OBBHA Executives:
Phantom: It’s great to have all three of you in the same room! How are you enjoying the OBBHA experience so far? OBBHA Executive: We are pleased with the feedback we are receiving from the membership. It seems they love the OBBHA product and like the zero tolerance towards inappropriate actions whether they be physical or verbal. Phantom: Regarding that…what are your biggest concerns getting that message across? OBBHA Executive: We wouldn’t call them concerns. It has been a learning experience for everyone who walks through our doors and joins us to play and have fun. Everyone realizes that 99% of the players are out to have fun and get some exercise. The rules are there to implement when someone decides to take matters into their own hands. It might sound like a broken record to some, but it works. So we aren’t concerned at all. The OBBHA is what it is…you know…”come join us to laugh and play” it says on the main-page of the website, and that is what we do ourselves! All of us are having a blast. Phantom: Some very interesting team names over the 3-years the OBBHA has been operating. What is your favourite one? OBBHA Executive: Global Friendship….no, just kidding! Probably Epic Fail. OBBHA Executive: Infamous Roaches OBBHA: Chiquitas on the women’s side and Sticks & Balls for the men (new team this winter) Phantom: Who is the best goalie in the OBBHA? OBBHA Executive: No way to fairly answer that question. There have been so many unbelievable performances by the goalies in the OBBHA. Remember they get 60+ shots in an hour in the OBBHA game. They seem to love the action and thrive on it. They are exhausted after every game but keep coming back for more. Many say it’s the best workout they have ever had. Phantom: Top team? OBBHA: Again you have to consider all the divisions and you just can’t answer that one without tons of qualifiers…..Wild Dawgs and Godfathers have been consistent and even these teams have been beaten out in the play-offs. Phantom: Why don’t you have more tournaments? OBBHA Executive: We hope to in the future. We have 24 teams playing in the Xmas Classic which will feature 3 on 3 play, but our focus has always been on league play and the 4 on 4 game. Our membership wants that exercise from week to week. Phantom: Regarding the exercise, the research you quote on the website is interesting. Is this why you came up with the OBBHA rules? OBBHA Executive: All three of us have played the game a long time and at all levels. We developed the rules and non-stop play so that skill and endurance will prevail over everything else. Excuse me, but the “crap” that goes on in some hockey just did not sit well with us or with any of our previous team mates either. We wanted to promote the fun and safe part of the game. To never go back to “football style” games and take out the enforcer/intimidation player from the game. We are very passionate about that aspect. We are probably most proud of this fact…taking that out of the game and making the OBBHA a place everyone can come play.
Phantom: Youth and young players. They seem to be a large part of your membership.
OBBHA Executive: The Youth program is very exciting. We began with a strong fundamentals campaign to start the kids off with, and now they are just out playing games every Saturday. It is growing every session and we believe it will continue to grow exponentially until the OBBHA will have the strongest Youth ball hockey program in the Ottawa area. OBBHA Executive: Just to add to that…we have advanced several of our youth teams over the age of 16 into the men’s leagues to give them a higher skill level to test themselves with. All of them have proven to be very good teams and players. They love the OBBHA game and run from the first whistle to the last. Last Spring was a very young group of teams competing…and it made for some very exciting games. Nice to have the parents and families in attendance to watch and enjoy the OBBHA product…and they are overheard saying its more exciting than a Sens game! Phantom: Let’s take a break…..more to come later! OBBHA Executive: Wait, who is the Phantom? Phantom: Interview is over……
December 4 Two games decided by a shoot-out on final day of Saturday League! Goalies shine....
Epic Fail and Mighty Canaries played for 7th and 8th seeds and they battled it out right to the end. This one looked destined for a shoot-out as Epic Fail held a perilous one gaol lead 7-6 until finally in the last minute the Epic Fail scored for an 8-6 win to send their fans home happy. A shoot-out would have been interesting as both teams were exhausted after giving it their all for this one. Onliners vs the Champs. The Wildcards came into this one freshly shaved or dolled up for the championship picture that was to be taken with the presentation of the trophy. With a 6-3 leader after 2-periods, they scored two early third period goals for an 8-3 lead. Eyeing the trophy and thinking of post game drinks together the Wildcards were a happy bunch. The Onliners noticed this and pounced. Captain Tim McLeod carried the team on his back to lead the orange keyboard punchers back for an 8-8 tie to send it to a shoot-out!!!!!!!!!!! 5 shooters each. First 5 Onliners failed to score and finally the 5th shooter for the Wildcards found the net for the wild 9-8 Wildcards win! Onliners finished a solid 4th place for an expansion team of individual registrations. The Bigs 10 Vanier VooDoo 6…..The Bigs flexed their offensive muscle once again. This team can score. The always competitive scary dolls just could not get a break around the net to keep this one closer. Vanier boys lost some close ones this year and were always a threat to steal a win. They get 6th while The Bigs win the bottom play-off pool for 5th Place. Last game of the Saturday fall session was an interesting affair. One Man Wolf Pack had ended any thoughts of an undefeated fall season for the Professional Slackers on the last game of the regular season. Then in the play-off round robin, some thought this game would be for the final. It ended up being for 2nd and 3rd place. The wolf pack gave the Professional Slackers fits as they kept coming back for one goal and two goal deficits to send this game to shoot-out tied at 6-6. Captain Kirk of the Professional Slackers was the poke-check king of the nets as he stopped all 4 shots he faced, while his shooters scored twice in four attempts to end this one after 4 shooters each for a 7-6 shoot-out win. Awesome Saturday games all fall! See you on January 8th…schedule posted online week of January 3rd.
November 27 Saturday Champion is decided on second last day of the 2010 fall session.
Wildcards win it! All through the fall session the buzz was for the Professional Slackers to go through fall right through to Xmas for an undefeated season. However a late season loss put the end to an undefeated record. Now the Wildcards are the press clipping kings after their 7-5 win over the early favourites. They now lead the play-off pool and can’t be caught in the last games next Saturday Dec 4th. This game was a great game from start to finish. A 2-0 first period lead for the Professional Slackers had the Wildcards searching for an answer to score. Another goal and it might have been lights out to be down by 3 against a hard working club like the Slackers. However they kept to their passing system and ball control to eke out the win 7-5. Great play from both teams with a little bit of old fashioned emotion. A respectful game that grasped the OBBHA motto for the most part. Fun and entertaining for the knowledgeable OBBHA fans in attendance, although some of the newcomers were a little lost at first about the change of possession rules. Always a learning experience at an OBBHA game and always full of surprises as the Wildcards are crowned the Saturday champs! Mighty Canaries and The Bigs played run and gun game that was tied at 8-8 going into the final two minutes. The Bigs scored two big goals in those final minutes to take a 10-8 win. Vanier Voodoo looked extremely impressive in their 12-3 win over Epic Fail. They controlled the game from start to end .
One Man Wolf Pack outlasted the Onliners 9-4. Play-offs are on! November 20th In the 5th to 8th Seed Pool: Vanier Voodoo decided they had enough of close game and put a complete game together vs a short benched Mighty Canarie squad, The yellow birds started quickly out of the gate but faded quickly after running out gas. 8-2 for the dolls from Vanier. The Bigs 11-7 over Epic Fail. The Epic Fail again were short bodies to start a game, but were in the lead in the first period! Lot's of quality shots from the Bigs resulted in lots of nice goals. In the 1st to 4th Seed Pool: WIldcards served notice that they are all about ball control. They dominated the One Man Wolf Pack for an 8-1 win. It was not easy however, as the Pack worked hard from start to finish. The top ranked Professional Slackers had their unbeaten streak stopped at 6 last week....but they took care of business in their first ever OBBHA play-off game 14-3 over the Onliners. The first period was great as it was end to end action...but the first place club just did not let up in the effort department to pull away in the third period, as it was only 5-2 in after two periods.
October 30 Onliners win a huge game over the One Man Wolf Pack 9-5. Their best game yet! Creative passing made for some beautiful goals and the D was very strong on the ball for most of the game. Mighty Canaries played a complete game from start to finish for a 7-5 win over the Vanier Voodoo. The one was in doubt right to the end as both teams traded scoring chances throughout a hard running game. The Bigs vs Wildcards in an important match for the standings....Wildcards prevailed 8-5 behind the solid goaltending of their newly acquired back-up. Lot`s of quality scoring threats at both ends made for a very entertaining match. Epic Fail vs Proffessinoal Slackers....everyone predicted a one-sided outcome. But the fans filled the `French Palace`for this one and they were thrilled by a very intense and clean OBBHA style game. Although the final was 7-2 for the first place club, the Epic Fail were in this one until the mid-way point of the third. Plenty of applause was heard for both sides. Nicely done boys in the Game of the Day!
October 23 After the long break the Saturday squads came back with excitement. However the Wildcards #1 goalie sustained a lower-body injury that will keep her out for at least a month. Their back-up on this day was the difference in a very well played 6-4 win over the Vanier Voodoo. Game of the Day! Epic Fail surged near the end of the game and played their best third period in awhile. It was not enough in a 9-5 loss to the ever getting stronger One Man Wolf Pack. The Bigs and the Mighty Canaries played a tight game until the last few minutes of the tilt. The Bigs get the 8-5 win. Onliners gave it their all but did not have offence to match the Professional Slackers. The first place squad continues to roll with an 11-4 win. October 2 *Remember No Games Until October 23 Wildcards 5-2 over One Man Wolf Pack.....This one was in doubt until the final minutes. Goaltending was key, even though the Wildcards started the game without one! Goals were hard to come by as the defences kept the shots to the outside. The Bigs are officially for real. A 10-6 over the Onliners will give them some confidence. An offensive game with tons of shots. Onliners made a goalie change for this one and goaltending was the difference. Epic Fail by their own. Not enough players to compete. 14-1 loss to the Vanier Voodoo who licked their chops and stuck goals into their net-dolls. Professional Slackers and the Mighty Canaries engaged in a well played match. 7-1 for the number one ranked Slackers....but this one was closer than the score would indicate. September 25: How about this...First Win in Franchise History for the Mighty Canaries! 8-6 over Epic Fail. In their best game yet, the "Birds" were out in front 3-0 early and never relinquished the lead. The boys must have been out of their cage to celebrate this one! Wildcards continue to impress offensively with a 16-7 win over the previously unbeaten Onliners. The youngsters took over this game for the Wildcards, while their wily old defence was solid and used creative passing to get out of any trouble deep in their end. The Bigs brought in 5 new players and they were a weclome relief after The Bigs could not compete with a small bench. The "play of the night" was performed by The Bigs....a beautiful 4-way passing play that resulted in a tap in at the side of the net! One Man Wolf Pack had to work hard for a 12-10 over The Bigs, as they scored two late goals to put it away over this "new" team. Look out for The Bigs to be in every game from here on in. The Professional Slackers pasted a team with a short bench last week...this week they met up with another team with a short bench. The Vanier Voodoo had one spare, but played an amazingly gutsy game in a 7-3 loss. The Vanier Voodoo have lost some close games....what would happen if they showed up the a full bench? First star goes to Mike in the nets for the Voodoo....he was on fire! September 18: Vanier Voodoo and Onliners both played in separate barn-burners last week....and they continued the tradition today. This one was back and forth from beginning to end. The Onliners are the surprise team of the league so far and they held a 6-5 lead until the Voodoo stuff happened again with 90 seconds lefit to tie it all up at 6-6. But the hex wore off as the Onliners scored the winner 15 seconds later and Terry held the fort in the nets for a 7-6 heart stopping win. Fans are buying tickets in bunches for games involving these teams! The Epic Fail finally took place. The first blow-out of the session. 14-5 for the Wildcards. The winners looked speedy and passed well. The Epic Fail only had 6 runners....proving once again that you need 8 runners in order to compete in an OBBHA game regardless of the night or afternoon you play in. One Man Wolf Pack 6-3 winners over the Mighty Canaries.....this was a great game. Very close until a couple of late goals put it away for the howlers. This was a goaltending battle all the way. Not much too choose from between the clubs. Lot's of fun and a good sweat. Professional Slackers 19-4 over The Bigs....to be fair the winners are the strongest squad of the league and The Bigs are still trying fill up their roster. Better thing are in store for The Bigs. The Slackers are a team that comes to work hard, so you have to be ready to run or they will eat you up. They have some shooters too!
Opening Day! Parody! Parody! Parody! It was predicted that this league would be the most difficult to predict. All games will be tough call. Nobody will win money on ProLine in the this division. ....and it came to pass! One Man Wolf Pack vs Vanier Voodoo. This one was fun from beginning to end. With one minute left in 7-7 tie, a Wolf scored to make it 8-7. With 39 seconds left, some Voodoo was performed to tie it at 8. But with 3-seconds left a wolf left the pack to tap in the winners! A howler! The Mighty Canaries came out of the cage flying and looked like they would take it to the league build Onliners. The new Onliners (all signed up as individuals online) started to find their game slowly to build a 4-2 lead after two periods. The Canaries roared back early in the third to tie it at 4-4. But long shifts proved to be their undoing as the Onliners used short shifts to take advantage for an 8-4 win. Interesting game! Epic Fail vs The Bigs.....maybe Epic Fail should change their name?! They were down Big mid-way through the third, but staged an epic comeback (there best in franchise history) for a wild 13-13 tie. Goals were plenty, but some key saves were made by netminder Josh of Epic Fail as Big Ronnie tested him often with his Big Booming shots. Profession Slackers vs Wildcards....The Wildcards kept falling behind to a speedy team that is nowhere near its namesake. Down 2-goal spreads a few times, the Wildcards used some nice passing to set up game tying goals. Finally they tied it up at 8-8 only to see the Professional Slackers score 2 late goals for a 10-8 opening day win. Wow!
