The tournament is organized to maximize your exercise and fun.
Hence the 7 player including goalie max roster rule.
Survival of the fittest as you play 30-minute games of the non-stop action OBBHA style of play (same rules you see on website).

OBBHA has 3 gyms that you will be playing your games in.
There is a white tape on the stick policy rule that is strictly enforced for the 2 wood floor surfaces
-a white tape full wrap from the heel to toe
*the other gym with the well-worn all-purpose sports-floor does not have the white-tape rule

And note new from last year is that shots must be waist or lower and include the follow-through (not shoulder as in previous years)

  • Slap shots are not allowed (see next note below)...*New Spring 2017
  • Any stick above the waist for wind up, follow throughs will result in loss of possession. (if a player does this multiple times he will be warned that the next time a penalty shot will be awarded).
  • -High sticking the ball over the shoulder (not waist) is a penalty shot...and the play is whistled dead immediately on contact with the ball
  • Penalties = Standard hockey infractions will result in a quick whistle for change of possession (6 feet is awarded between ball and oponents stick before play is whistled in)
  • Half-court is given after a goal.
  • To start a game or period or after a goal is scored, the designated team takes the ball behind their own net and waits for the Game Manager to whistle the `game on`. The defending team must be on their own side of the centre line until the play is whistled for `game on`. At this point the defending team may cross the centre line to forecheck and the offensive team can pass, shoot or run with the ball. The play is live on the whistle!
  • Regular hockey sticks are permitted. However for the French Palace gym (wood floor), there is a White Velcro policy. The stick must have a full strip of White Velcro from heel to toe so that none of the bottom of the stick is exposed ...*New Fall 2017 and built into the Winter 2018 cost per player/team as this strip of Velcro will be made available by the OBBHA at every game as it is a mandatory requirement. This is not required for the Blue Gym for tournaments which has a rubberized floor.
  • An orange ball is used...water-filled for the Xmas Classic tournament for less bounce (all gyms) and a mid-range softness ball in the French Palace for any league play for better ball control skills on the bigger surface.

Looking forward to another day of exciting ball hockey and lots of laughs!

Cheers!
John Struthers and your OBBHA Staff

Thursday, Nov 9th games that were missed are moved to:

Sunday, Dec 3rd Noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm

Fall 2017 leagues start Saturday, September 23 through 28

(renovations look pristine and are almost done...hence a little later start)

Two very important rule changes we implemented in the Spring Session:
(in anticipation of protecting the renovations and curbing injuries)

First is the full wrap of white tape of the stick from heel to toe
(this is all of our responsibility....we must be constantly looking at the sticks and not allow a player on the floor in warm-ups/games without a full wrap of white tape completely covering the under belly of the stick. With the game live-streaming the school board can see if we are not doing our job on this. No more strip only and again the inspections from us must be strictly enforced. We must be on this!!!
So make sure your team is fully supplied with white tape each week!

Second is the waist high shot. This will reduce injuries from wild shots and follow through that cut or impact defending players. We are looking for snaps shot, wrist shots and more passing to improve the product. Every other league has the waist rule...ours is only a possession change (other leagues call penalties), but on a 3rd infraction for the same player, it will be a penalty shot. A warning after the 2nd infraction will be given.

We also have changed the ball to a softer one. A mid-range between the hard one we used and the ultra soft one other leagues use. It still moves nicely and is easy to stick-handle with. The Spring teams enjoyed the changed ball.

With the pristine renovations, live-streaming and balanced leagues there is big excitement to get started!
See you soon!

Hello all Women's captains and players! (Updated August 21, 2017 for the Fall Session)

We are going to open up the entire Thursday night for the women’s div because of the quick interest over the last few days since we offered a 2ND women’s div outside of the sold-out 6-team Tuesday division.

-we have informed the 4 men’s teams for Thurs and moved them to other nights prior to this email to potentially interested women.

So its very exciting the we would have room for a 10 team league as we believe the women’s game is growing and the interest will eventually be there J

-we have not worked on Sunday at all at this point…we mentioned Sunday for the competitive teams as we did not want the top teams in the city coming to play on Thursday nights vs rec teams (although we could divide into divisions…but we believe it would be way more fun with teams close in skill-sets).

-top players are welcome...we would like to see you sprinkled throughout the league to help develop everyone's skills together.

At this point the Sonics and Red Jays are the strongest teams joining Thurs nights and the rest are rec style with the Boomers (and adding some of you individuals to that team later in the week), Silver Bullets and a team the league will build from the small groups and individuals signing up.

-so  we are at 5 teams at the moment!

-2 or 3 other potential team leaders have been in touch as well....as we await their recruiting reports

Would your team consider the Thursday night?

-please contact me asap if there is any more interest!

-and as always goalies should contact me if they are looking for a team

(remember the games are the longest in the city with three 18-minute periods!)

Cheers!

John Struthers

President, OBBHA

Much momentum for a Thursday division at this point :
Sunday is still an option....but so far Thursday nights has all the interest for a potential 6 team league to augment the now full 6-team Tuesday division

For Thursday:
-at this point we have strong interest from 3 teams
(Boomers, Sonics and Silver Bullets..and some individuals that can join a team or that we can form a team with)
We would like to stress that the intent is to have a fun time like we do on the Terrific Tuesday Women's night with the 6-teams there.
So this is not a competitive division.
In fact we will promote the lending of players back and forth if one team is too weak one night or short for whatever reason (weather/work etc.)
We still have those hours for Sunday afternoon if those really competitive teams want to play one another then.
Our long term goal is to help grow the women's game for the Vanier league with our gym leagues to develop the skills of new and seasoned players....and perhaps do future cross over games between the OBBHA Tuesday and Thurs divisions in our every popular "OBBHA Struts Challenge Series" we do with the men from time to time.

Once again its great to see that we can at least start something for Thursday nights!
-remember we started the Tuesday league with 2 1/2 teams and now its a roaring fun time!

Let me know asap if any other individuals or teams want to join in on the fun!
Cheers!

***********************************

FALL 2016 SPECIFICS ARE BELOW!

-Tuesday Women's League dates are posted on the website with the first game on Tuesday, October 4

Hello Past and Present Team Captains, interested individuals and those of you who follow the action in the Game Recaps, Twitter and now Instagram!

What a summer!
And now Fall OBBHA Tuesday Night Women's ball hockey that starts up Oct 4th.

For those of you reading out loud to someone....take a deep breath as here comes all the information in one big booming slap-shot!

We are currently organizing the men's leagues and have over 50 teams that start up Sept 10 through 15
-we have capped the Tuesday men's league at 4 teams (we could have had more) so we can open up 6 team spots for the Women's Tuesday division

The OBBHA has been committed to growing women's ball hockey.
-we have coached at the provincial and national levels
-we have helped develop elite women's players by integrating players and teams into some of our appropriate men's leagues
-created women's leagues at the OBBHA

In the interest of growing women's ball hockey at the grass roots level, we started a rec-level Tuesday league last year that had 3 teams in the Fall and then 4 in the Winter (the year before it was open to A-Div teams, but now we have moved that group into our men's divisions as noted above)
-now we look to offer a 6 team rec-level league
-we can grow from there in the future should any more teams want to play on Sunday afternoons as well (from 1pm to 4pm....so another 6 teams)

However at this point in time we will focus on the Tuesday Night Division and go with 6 teams.
-at the moment we have following 5 teams committed
Ninjas Team #1
Ninjas Team #2 (still looking for 3 more players)
Killer Bees
Shelina Jamal (close to a full team)
Boomers
6?

Note:

Shelina Jamal’s Team: 7 of 10 games must be 6,7,8pm games (so only 3 9pm or 10pm games on the second Tuesday of every month)

Ninjas Team #1 would like the same as above

Ninjas Team #2 would need all games 6,7,8pm

This leaves only one team spot remaining for the Tuesday Night league
(during the session we can survey this league about adding Sunday afternoon games should more teams want to join and perhaps do a balanced schedule for both days....but let's not get ahead of ourselves as this is something we just wanted to share with you as a future option for the Winter Session that starts in late January).

Update on other teams that may take that last  team spots:

Hades Goddesses captain cannot play this Fall
-there may be some players interested in playing
-we have asked Elise Fournier to contact the team to see where they are at

Kate Richer has team that may be interested

Indies:
-last year they had attendance problems and no goalie
-so we look to have them join forces with another team
-any Indies from last year should touch base with me should you wish to play again this Fall

Individual players:
-some of you already reached out to me this month, so I will see what the landscape is over the next couple of weeks and then get back to you as promised
-if you have not been in touch with me, please do so now so I can add you to the list

So this is where we are at!
I will touch base with everyone in September once I hear from everyone or get that last team placed in the division.

Cheers!

John Struthers

President, OBBHA
